MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Violet Way Academy is a thriving infant school with an excellent reputation within the community. There are currently 280 pupils on roll and the nursery’s capacity is 120 sessions per week. The Academy was established in June 2011. Increasingly, the demand for places exceeds the school’s capacity. This is equally true of the independent nursery on the same site.
On attaining Academy status the area of woodland, between ourselves and Paulet High school, was included in the building and land transfer in trust to the Governing Body or ‘Directors’. This is an impressive feature of the school’s facilities and is used effectively to enhance the already broad and stimulating curriculum. The school’s library, ICT suite and separate dining room are all fully timetabled. Specialist teaching in ICT, dance, music and the Forest School initiative support the school’s vision for pupils to ‘reach for the stars’. Setting to ability for numeracy and the teaching of phonics and spellings promote our desire to cater for children as individuals. Occasionally, we also set for literacy weeks. The practice of setting is highly effective in raising and maintaining our high academic standards. As an Academy we remain committed to providing a curriculum which reflects national requirements, but which also offers innovative opportunities to enthuse our pupils. A residential visit is organised annually for Year 2 pupils and a family day visit to Llandudno is included for Year 1. Our Year 2 pupils have the opportunity to perform in a ‘real’ theatre in the town centre in November each year. We make good use of the Sports Hall at Paulet High School and try to ensure that all Year 1 pupils learn to swim. As a Healthy School, excellent attention is paid to diet through cooking lessons for pupils and our superb catering provision which has been independently run for over 4 years.

Our aim is to help all our pupils become confident learners and to shine in their particular areas of strength and interest. Children who are less academic are well supported in their learning and every success is celebrated. Academy status gives us a freedom to design a curriculum focused on the needs of our children.

Individual pupil progress and attainment is regularly monitored and discussed. Intervention strategies are implemented as necessary.

A full-time SENCO supports the Principal in ensuring all children have access to the teaching and learning resources they need.

New technologies are well embedded within the curriculum and all classrooms have interactive whiteboards. Laptops are used in classrooms, ensuring technology supports learning across the curriculum. Cameras, camcorders and electronic microscopes are also integrated in a meaningful way.

The school responds to the needs of its’ community by offering before and after school care, including full day care for nursery aged children. This often attracts families from beyond our historical catchment area. The local community is important to us. We want our children to learn about the town, its’ industries and facilities. Excellent links with the churches, local library and senior citizens exist. National and international links have been established, in order that children learn about diversity and cohesion. We have an exceptionally important job to do. We have the responsibility of ensuring that we prepare our very young children with an interest in lifelong learning and an understanding of their role in society as responsible, caring and highly respected adults.
